Starbucks Corporation has been recognized for its ethical corporate behavior and has been listed on Ethisphere’s roster of the world’s most ethical companies multiple times (Ethisphere, 2021). However, continual examination and improvement are essential in navigating the complexities of international business ethics. This paper aims to analyze Starbucks’ current organizational culture, propose a plan for enhancing its ethical culture, and suggest learning strategies to foster sustained ethical practices.

Analysis of Starbucks’ Current Culture

Starbucks’ mission statement emphasizes nurturing the human spirit, suggesting a focus beyond mere profitability (Starbucks, 2021). However, certain value statements, such as those pertaining to growth and performance, appear incongruent with this ethos. Lencioni (2002) distinguishes between core and aspirational values, suggesting that Starbucks’ emphasis on growth may align more with the latter. Nevertheless, the company’s value statements generally advocate for ethical behavior, inclusivity, and integrity.

Despite these affirmations, Ethical Consumer criticizes Starbucks for various ethical shortcomings, including executive compensation disparities, tax practices, and inadequate environmental and labor policies (How ethical is Starbucks Corporation?, 2019). This highlights a tension between Starbucks’ celebrated corporate culture and its operational realities.

A Plan for Creating A More Ethical Culture

To enhance its ethical culture, Starbucks should address concerns raised by Ethical Consumer. This includes revising labor policies, particularly in regions with documented human rights issues, and ensuring fair compensation for employees. Additionally, the company should prioritize transparency in tax matters and environmental impact reporting. While such changes may entail financial costs, they are imperative for aligning corporate practices with ethical principles.

Learning Strategies to Foster an Ethical Culture

Efforts to instill ethical values should involve both top-down and bottom-up approaches. Executives can benefit from lectures, simulations, and mentoring to deepen their understanding of ethical considerations. Meanwhile, employees should receive regular ethical training sessions, potentially incorporating interactive elements and managerial participation to enhance engagement and accountability.
