This proposal aims to establish the need for nurse informaticists in healthcare and their positive impact on patient outcomes.

Nursing informatics is a combination of information science and nursing science that aims to improve patient care through the effective collection, management, analysis, and communication of data and information for clinical, research, and educational purposes. The nurse informaticist is a registered nurse with specialized education and training in informatics. They are essential in implementing new technology and ensuring that nursing practice is in line with the organization’s goals. Nurse informaticists have the responsibility of developing, implementing, and evaluating informatics systems, educating nursing staff on the use of technology, and ensuring that nursing practice meets regulatory standards (Williams, 2023).

The role of the nurse informaticist has become increasingly popular in healthcare organizations, with several implementing this role and experiencing positive outcomes. The security and confidentiality of protected health information are vital in the healthcare industry. By involving nurses in technology, nurse informaticists can establish procedures for securing patient data and minimizing the risk of data breaches (Troncoso, & Breads, 2021).
Workflow is another aspect that can be positively impacted by engaging nurses in technology. The utilization of technology can enhance the efficiency of nursing practice, thereby reducing the workload and stress of nurses. For example, “Clinical Decision Support Systems (CDSS)” can provide reminders to nurses, thereby enhancing the effectiveness of their care (Kataria, & Ravindran, 2020).
When introducing the role of nurse informatics, it is crucial to factor in the costs and returns on investment. Although implementing this role can be expensive, it can yield significant benefits. For instance, the utilization of EHRs has resulted in cost savings by enhancing efficiency and reducing the consumption of paper (Troncoso, & Breads, 2021).
Opportunities and Challenges
One opportunity presented to nurses and the interdisciplinary team with the addition of a nurse informaticist role is the potential for improved efficiency and patient outcomes through the effective use of technology. The nurse informaticist is capable of aiding in the adoption and maintenance of electronic health record (EHR) systems, leading to improved patient care efficiency and reduced documentation errors. Additionally, nurse informaticists can provide timely and accurate data analysis to support clinical decision-making and improve patient outcomes (Pajarillo et al., 2021).
However, there are also some challenges associated with the addition of a nurse informaticist role.
