The nursing profession is continuously evolving with technological advancements that enhance patient care quality, promote patient safety, and improve interdisciplinary team collaboration. This annotated bibliography aims to explore the impact of selected technologies on nursing practice’s quality and safety standards. The technology chosen for this annotated bibliography is “Telehealth.” Telehealth is a relatively new technology that provides remote healthcare services through communication technologies. The rationale behind selecting this technology is the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to a surge in telehealth’s usage to facilitate healthcare delivery without physical contact.

The search was conducted using the Capella University Library’s electronic databases, including CINAHL, PubMed, and ProQuest. The following search terms were used: Telehealth, nursing, quality, safety, patient care, and interdisciplinary team. The publication year was restricted to the last five years, i.e., from 2016 to 2021. The search resulted in several publications related to Telehealth, and four peer-reviewed publications were selected based on their relevance to the research topic.

They analyzed 25 articles that met their inclusion criteria, which focused on the use of telehealth in various healthcare settings and for different health conditions.

The authors address the possible benefits of telehealth for the ageing population are improved outcomes for patients and lower healthcare expenses. The article discussed the difficulties connected with adopting telemedicine for the aging population, such as technical hurdles, a lack of technological knowledge, and privacy concerns. The authors provide successful telehealth programs, such as the VA Video Connect program and the Telehealth Intervention Program for seniors. The research found that telehealth can reduce healthcare costs by decreasing the need for hospitalizations and emergency room visits. However, the authors point out that more study is required to identify the most effective telehealth treatments for the aging population as well as to address the difficulties involved with telehealth implementation. The authors suggest that healthcare providers and policymakers should prioritize the implementation of telehealth for the aging population.

This paper is highly pertinent because it investigates the effect of telemedicine on diabetes treatment quality and safety indicators, which is a critical problem for both healthcare providers and patients. The authors used a systematic review methodology to analyze the relevant literature on the topic. The included studies were published in English and performed between January 2007 and December 2016, and were assessed for quality using the Cochrane Collaboration’s risk of bias tool. The paper provides a thorough examination of 26 works that satisfied the inclusion requirements. In addition, the paper was released in Telemedicine and e-Health, a peer-reviewed journal renowned for its high standards in publishing scientific research. The authors used data from a major home healthcare service in the United States to perform a retrospective cohort analysis. The study included 236 patients who received home telehealth services and 331 patients who received usual care. Summary of Recommendation

The use of telehealth technology has been found to have significant positive impacts on patient safety and quality of care in healthcare settings. Telehealth is a patient-care technology that employs internet contact and information technology to provide healthcare services to patients in remote or underserved regions. It has been shown to improve clinical outcomes, reduce healthcare costs, and improve patient satisfaction. The organizational factors of Telehealth including Telehealth infrastructure, legal and regulatory frameworks, and payment and reimbursement policies can influence the selection and implementation of telehealth technologies in healthcare settings.

The research on the use of telemedicine for neuropsychological assessment suggests that telehealth can be a reliable and legitimate option to in-person assessment, especially when in-person assessment is not practical or secure. Home telehealth has the potential to enhance clinical results while lowering costs in home healthcare. It was suggested that home telehealth can reduce hospital readmissions, ER trips, and increase patient happiness. It was also found that telemedicine can improve glycemic control and Lipid profiles. The evolution of telemedicine is transforming healthcare delivery worldwide, but challenges such as regulatory barriers and reimbursement issues must be addressed. Overall, healthcare professionals and nurses should consider implementing telehealth programs to improve healthcare access, quality, and patient outcomes.
