Health Topic Approval

Health education plays a pivotal role in improving the quality of life for individuals across all demographics. By fostering awareness within communities about prevalent health issues and diseases, positive health outcomes can be achieved. According to Health Education Strategies (2015), health education involves disseminating information to target populations regarding specific health topics, elucidating the health benefits or threats they face, and equipping them with tools to facilitate behavior change within appropriate settings. This assessment aims to propose three health topics for approval, each suitable for a 30-minute educational session.

Depression

Depression is a mental health disorder characterized by persistent feelings of sadness and loss of interest or pleasure in activities. It can significantly impair daily functioning and quality of life. Raising awareness about mental illness fosters an environment where affected individuals can openly express their emotions and seek support. The American Psychiatric Association reports that approximately one in 15 adults experience depression in any given year, with one in six individuals encountering depression at some point in their lives (“What Is Depression?”, n.d.). Initiating conversations about mental health is crucial in dispelling stigma and promoting understanding and empathy within communities.

Preeclampsia

Preeclampsia is a serious complication that can arise during pregnancy, typically manifesting after the 20th week. If left untreated, it can lead to severe complications for both the mother and the unborn child, including seizures, stroke, or even maternal mortality. It is imperative to raise awareness about preeclampsia as some women may not exhibit symptoms, or these symptoms may be overlooked. Given its potential for rapid progression, early detection and intervention are paramount for ensuring favorable outcomes for both mother and baby.

Diabetes

Diabetes is a metabolic disorder characterized by elevated blood sugar levels, resulting from inadequate insulin production or impaired insulin utilization. There are two primary types: type 1, which often manifests early in life and is predominantly genetic, and type 2, which is closely linked to lifestyle factors such as diet and physical activity. Raising awareness about diabetes and its associated complications is essential for promoting adherence to treatment regimens and preventive measures. Lifestyle modifications, including dietary changes, regular exercise, and weight management, can significantly reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), diabetes is a chronic health condition that affects the body’s ability to convert food into energy (CDC, 2023).
