Strength-based Assessments in Organizational Leadership

Strength-based assessments are used within organizations to gain information regarding an employee’s or leader’s strengths and weaknesses in terms of their specific leadership styles. The purpose of obtaining this information is to assist organizations in understanding how to approach each situation effectively. Strategies utilized to improve team members’ strengths and weaknesses include gaining an understanding of their current standings through strength-based assessments, obtaining support from mentors or coaches, and developing situational awareness to determine which traits of the individual’s leadership style can be utilized depending on the situation (Barker, 1997; Cohen et al., 2016).


In the realm of leadership and management, strength-based assessments are often utilized to understand individuals’ strengths and weaknesses in their leadership styles. These assessments provide feedback and recommendations for future development, aiding management in assessing leaders’ internal, external, emotional, and behavioral competencies (Mackie, 2016). For instance, in Company A, it is crucial for conducting year-end performance reviews to ask employees to complete strength-based assessments beforehand. These assessments benefit not only leaders but also employees and followers, as they contribute to a better understanding of individual skills and traits, influencing how individuals respond to various situations (Barker, 1997).

Strategies for Future Development

Furthering the development of leadership traits is essential for leaders. Regardless of an individual’s current skills and traits, it is vital to build upon both strengths and weaknesses. For example, individuals with characteristics of a humanity leader should also strengthen traits of the temperance leadership style (Zaccaro et al., 2018). Strategies such as analyzing personal strengths and weaknesses, acquiring support through coaching and mentors, and developing situational awareness are crucial for further development (Eisenbeiß & Giessner, 2012).


Strength-based assessments are crucial in understanding a team’s strengths and weaknesses within an organization. Successful strategies for improving team members’ strengths and weaknesses include obtaining support from mentors or coaches and developing situational awareness. By utilizing these strategies, individuals can further develop their specific leadership traits and effectiveness within the organization.
