Leadership is not an innate trait but rather a product of life experiences. At the behest of a military supervisor, I underwent a self-assessment using the Values in Action (VIA) personality strengths test to ascertain my leadership aptitude. The VIA results highlighted strengths in collaboration, perseverance, and sound judgment, while indicating areas for improvement in compassion, spirituality, and socialization. To enhance my leadership, strategies were formulated, including focusing on strength development, fostering self-leadership, and seeking mentorship. These strategies aim to cultivate a deeper understanding of personal strengths and areas for growth.

Assessing Strengths

Assessing one’s strengths as a leader is paramount for character development. Strengths encompass a blend of talents, skills, and behavioral tendencies that influence optimal performance and authenticity. My experience in the military, particularly in leading a team in challenging situations like Al Fallujah, underscored my strengths in teamwork, perseverance, and judgment. These experiences illuminate the significance of leveraging strengths to navigate complex scenarios successfully.

Strategies for Development

Effective leadership hinges on continuous personal growth. Key strategies for leadership development include focusing on strength enhancement through relationships, nurturing self-leadership, and seeking mentorship. By soliciting feedback from those familiar with us, we gain insights into our strengths and weaknesses. Additionally, cultivating self-awareness, confidence, and efficacy facilitates goal attainment. Furthermore, mentorship provides invaluable guidance, feedback, and support in charting a path toward leadership excellence.

Enhancing Leadership Effectiveness

Leadership development is further bolstered by embracing strength-based theories and nurturing subordinates’ growth. Drawing from experiences and learning, leaders can identify individual strengths and leverage them to foster team cohesion and performance. Additionally, creating a supportive environment and offering guidance aids in the development of junior leaders. Compassion and understanding play pivotal roles in nurturing personal relationships and motivating subordinates.


Self-assessment is integral to understanding and augmenting leadership capabilities. Through the VIA personality strengths test, I gained valuable insights into my strengths and areas for improvement. Strategies such as strength-focused development, self-leadership, and mentorship offer pathways for continuous growth. By embracing these approaches and drawing from experiences, I endeavor to evolve as a more effective leader.
