Summarize the concept/theory.

Social cognitive theory involves the compartmentalization and categorization of information for easy comprehension. It emphasizes personal, behavioral, and environmental factors, suggesting that individuals develop automatic responses based on ingrained beliefs related to factors such as race, gender, and age. According to this theory, observations and learning from a young age shape individuals’ preferences and perceptions, leading to the formation of stereotypes and prejudices (Schunk & DiBenedetto, 2020).

Real World Example

An example of social cognitive theory in daily life is evident in the perpetuation of racial stereotypes and prejudices. For instance, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the automatic association of the virus with China led to hostility towards Chinese immigrants, demonstrating how preconceived notions based on race influence behavior (Abdullah, 2019). Additionally, instances such as a comedian addressing stereotypes about Chinese people in a reality show highlight how observations and beliefs contribute to discriminatory attitudes (Schunk & DiBenedetto, 2020).
